In a cluttered employment environment, applying for jobs can be a challenge. You mayspend hours scrolling through job boards, tailoring applications and fine-tuning your CV, only to find there are hundreds of applicants for the same position. Or worse still, you may nothear back at all.
The good news is advertised roles are only part of the picture as there are plenty of opportunities outside of job boards. This is what’s often called the hidden job market.
Jobs in the pipeline
Some hidden jobs are those an employer knows about but hasn’t started recruiting for. They may be planning an expansion, expecting someone to retire or leave … or simply waiting on budget approval.
That means a role can exist weeks or even months before it’s advertised. And if you’re already on the right person’s radar you may hear about it before everyone else.
Jobs that stay hidden
Then there are jobs that never surface publicly. Many employers skip the time and cost of advertising and fill positions through referrals, word of mouth, professional networks or people they already know. The Management Consulted global resource estimates that up to 80% of jobs are filled this way.
There’s another possibility too. If you approach a company with the skills and experience needed, they may create a new position to fill that gap.
The best way to uncover hidden opportunities is to start a conversation.
Connect with humans
The best way to uncover these openings is to start a conversation. Think about former colleagues, professional contacts and people you’ve met through webinars, industry events or social media. You can also make a list of companies or individuals you’d like to work for and approach them directly.
Instead of asking if they’re hiring, ask for their perspective or advice. What’s happening in the industry? What skills are becoming more important? Where do they see opportunities emerging?
Most people are happy to share their knowledge, and you never know where it will lead. Even if they aren’t hiring, they may know someone who is.
Open new doors
Navigating the hidden job market isn’t a replacement for traditional applications or a shortcut to the perfect role. It’s a complementary strategy that takes research and a willingness to network, even if that means stepping outside your comfort zone.
Remember, quality is far more important than quantity. Rather than collecting hundreds of shallow connections, it’s better to develop a handful of genuine relationships. That’s what builds trust, leads to referrals and opens doors to jobs you didn’t even know about.
