AI tools are quickly becoming a standard part of job applications. But how do you use them effectively while still sounding like yourself? The simple answer is to treat AI as an assistant that can improve your writing, rather than a replacement for it. Here’s how to strengthen your CV while staying in control of your career story.

Keep it honest

AI is notorious for inventing details that sound smooth and convincing. These can include inflated titles, stretched dates, overstated responsibilities and exaggerated achievements. Review every line to make sure claims are true and can be explained in an interview.

Replace buzzwords with insights

Because AI can lack real understanding of your industry, it tends to produce sweeping generalisations and empty jargon. Phrases like “synergistic change agent” are red flags to recruiters and hiring managers. Swap these for clear statements that demonstrate your knowledge and experience.

Stand out from the crowd

When many people use the same AI tools, applications can start to sound alike. Global recruitment firm Michael Page believes this is one of the biggest risks of relying too heavily on AI. Inject your individuality into your CV if you want it to stand out.

Brainstorm for inspiration

AI excels at generating ideas. This is especially helpful if you don’t know where to start or are uncomfortable with self-promotion. Once you’ve listed your experience, achievements, education and key skills ask it to suggest ways to describe these. You can then check for accuracy and make it sound like you.

Polish and fine-tune

Once you’re happy with your edit, paste it back in and ask AI to check grammar, spot repeated words, fix formatting or suggest alternative phrasing. Through this interactive process each round builds on the last.

Speak the employer’s language

Many employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to shortlist candidates whose CVs match the role. Even if your experience is relevant, your application may not get past this first step if it doesn’t use the ad’s language. Keep a base version of your CV and ask AI to identify the key terms in each job ad. If you mirror that terminology, you’ll improve your chances of reaching the next stage.

Be relevant and stay authentic

There are many AI tools available, and some are specifically designed for CVs and cover letters. When used as capable assistants rather than authors they can help make your application far more compelling – while keeping it honest and unmistakably yours.
